Zygostates is a genus of small leafy epiphytes. The genus is abbreviated as Zyt. in horticultural trade.


Plants are distributed from Brazil to Argentina and Paraguay. With the most species concentrated in Brazil.


Plants require warm temperature and shady conditions. Keep the humidity high and water frequently. Plants should never be allowed to dry out.


The word is from the Greek zygostates (weigher, balance) and refers to the projections from the base of the column which resemble a balance. Plants should be mounted on a stick or potted in sphagnum moss.
