Masdevallia colossus is an epiphytic orchid in the genus Masdevallia.

Description[]

Plant blooms from fall to winter with a 4 cm flower. The flowers are similar to Masdevallia hystrix except it has longer non-fused sepals and more narrow petals, a longer column and longer infloresence.

The type species was first collected in the Amazonas, Peru and was purchased and cultivated by Don Richardson in Long Island, New York. The plant first bloomed in cultivation on November 24, 1977

Distribution[]

Masd. colossus is found in Peru and Ecuador in cloud forest at elevations of 2000 to 2500 meters.

Culture[]

Keep plant in partial shade. Plant can be grown in cool to intermediate conditions. Pot the plant in fine bark with perlite or sphagnum moss. Water regularly and keep potting media moist.
