Plants are found in Florida and from Mexico to Bolivia and Paraguay


The lip of species in this genus has a short column, which has a foot and the 2 hard pollina are attached to a stipe.


Grow in cool to warm conditions with moderate to bright light. Water the plant right before the potting mix starts to dry. Plants should be potted in a well drain medium such as medium fir bark, treefern, or osmunda. Plants prefer to be mounted


The plant is named after the Greek words "ion" and "opsis" which means appearing like a violet which refers to the appearance of the flowers in this genus
