Distribution[]
The genus consists of 5 species, native to Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Colombia.
Plants differ from miltonia by having single leafed psuedobulbs and a different column.
Description[]
The genus Miltoniopsis was established in 1889 by Godefroy-Lebeuf when four plants were removed from the genus Miltonia, but it was not generally accepted until 1976, when it was resurrected by Garay and Dunsterville.
Culture[]
Plants are grown in moderate light with intermediate temperatures. They require a humidity range of 50 to 90%. During hot summers water the plant daily. As winter approaches, keep the plant media moist but not damp. In the winter reduce watering but do not let the mix dryout. Pot the plant in a well drain mix such as fine fir bark with perlite.
Naming[]
The genus is named after its similar characteristics to the genus Miltonia. The plants in this genus are also commonly called the pansy orchid for flowers that closely resemble the pansy.
